In this spectral, region tissue absorption is mainly determined by the contributions of oxyand deoxyhaemoglobin, water and lipids. Since the tissue absorption of light is much lower than in the visible region, the NIR spectral range permits the investigation of superficial tissue as well as deeper tissue compartments. Generally, light propagation through tissue in the NIR spectral range is characterised by high scattering of photons resulting in a diffusive process of light propagation. In the past, several experimental and theoretical methods have been developed Review Recent advances in contrast-enhanced near infrared diffuse optical imaging of diseases using indocyanine green

Contrast enhanced high-resolution diffuse optical tomography of the human brain using ICG

Non-invasive diffuse optical tomography (DOT) of the adult brain has recently been shown to improve the spatial resolution for functional brain imaging applications. Here we show that high-resolution (HR) DOT is also advantageous for clinical perfusion imaging using an optical contrast agent. We present the first HR-DOT results with a continuous wave near infrared spectroscopy setup using a den...

Concurrent MRI and diffuse optical tomography of breast after indocyanine green enhancement.

We present quantitative optical images of human breast in vivo. The images were obtained by using near-infrared diffuse optical tomography (DOT) after the administration of indocyanine green (ICG) for contrast enhancement. The optical examination was performed concurrently with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam on patients scheduled for excisional biopsy or surgery so that accurate image ...

In vivo continuous-wave optical breast imaging enhanced with Indocyanine Green.

We investigate the uptake of a nontargeted contrast agent by breast tumors using a continuous wave diffuse optical tomography apparatus. The instrument operates in the near-infrared spectral window and employs 16 sources and 16 detectors to collect light in parallel on the surface of the tumor-bearing breast (coronal geometry). In our protocol an extrinsic contrast agent, Indocyanine Green (ICG...

Fabrication of indocyanine green encapsulated biodegradable microbubbles for structural and functional imaging of cancer.

We developed a novel dual-modal contrast agent for the structural and functional imaging of cancer. The contrast agent was fabricated by encapsulating indocyanine green (ICG) in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microbubbles using a modified double-emulsion method. More stabilized absorption and fluorescence emission characteristics were observed for aqueous and plasma suspensions of ICG-enc...

Contrast-enhanced diffuse optical tomography of brain perfusion in humans using ICG

Continuous monitoring of brain perfusion at the bedside in neurointensive care is desirable. Currently used imaging modalities are not suited for frequent monitoring and often require the transport of the patient. Noninvasive near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in combination with an injection of a safe dye (indocyanine green, ICG) could serve as a quasicontinuous brain perfusion monitor. In this...
